God, Nature, Work ("Dievs Daba Darbs")

God, Nature, Work ("Dievs Daba Darbs")

Title of the project refers to the popular trilogy written by a Latvian female writer Anna Brigadere in the begining of the 20th century. This partly autobiographical novel examines traditional Latvian model of femininity and three main values that it is based on. Latvian families lived in the individual farmsteads in the countryside and their life was determined by notions of nature, work and religion.

In my project I research similar topic by reenacting a life of a country side woman who has passed away several years ago. Her children moved away but her house and all her belongings remained conserved in the house. I found it while working as an assistant of a photographer who documented Latvian country side people. Her house has remained untouched because its is located in a quite empty part of our country.

Before moving to capital I have spent big part of my childhood with my grandmother and her sister in this kind of settings. Everything there seemed familiar and I felt that this is a great opportunity to research a life style that I have run away from.
