Silence Has An Echo
Silence Has An Echo Silence Has An Echo, 2010. Operating on the grey zone between documentary and fiction,  history and myth, honesty and artifact, my practice is generated by the desire to understand myself and others. The most recent projects have been, in great measure an intent to combine documentary methods that I have learned while working for a news agent at the beginning of my career and an interest in philosophy, linguistics and cognitive science  that comes from my studies on Social Anthropology. In practical terms, mi work steps on a thin line between two different types of photography: staged reality using cinematographic lighting techniques, staged scenes commonly associated with cinema and photography of contaminated reportages (in other words by indirect intervention on the scene, by simply controlling some parameters). Representative problems, taxonomy, cosmopolitanism and nationalism have been recurring themes in my work through the years, presently my biggest challenge is that of how to combine these considerations on an intellectual and conceptual level with a more emotional and immediate form of photographing the world around us. The series presented, Silence Has An Echo, is I believe the most successful example of this form of work produced by me up until today. These photographs were produced in Bangkok, Thailand, where I lived a little while after the Thai military repression against the anti-governmental protestants in May 2010, that left more than ninety people dead and the central commercial district of Ratchaprasong burnt to the ground. To tell the truth, I remember being in my flat during the worst wave of violence, but when the danger of the  snipers lowered and I went out with my camera, lighting equipment and assistant, I returned to my house without having taken a single picture. I simply felt that I had nothing positive to add to what had happened and so it was best to say nothing. I realized that I was less interested in what was supposed to be considered a ‘show’ of political violence per se, and more in the individual experiences of the ordinary people in the society profoundly fractured by the game power of the political elite. So that, yes, Silence Has An Echo is a reaction to political facts, but in a way more than that it is the reflection of the relationship and experiences both of the portrayed and of mine. Most of the people in these photographs are my friends. I’ve known some of them for over ten years, and I have witnessed a change: the profound lines of preoccupation on their faces, the deeper line of division and the anger.
